Expertise

Devin Morgan is a partner at Patent Law Works focused on the systematic development of high-value patent portfolios. Devin is a strategic advisor to executive teams and in-house counsel looking to capture patent value and use it to support growth and transformational business opportunities, such as joint ventures, licensing, M&A, new markets, and new venture creation. His expertise extends beyond patent law and technology, to include patent and legal operations and how in-house teams, processes, and tools create sustainable value, with an increasing focus on how generative AI will transform patent portfolio growth, management, and deployment.

Devin has over 20 years of experience writing and prosecuting hundreds of patents for startups, mid-sized growth companies, and technology giants. But it is his insights as a former in-house counsel, intellectual property consultant, and startup founder that provide a unique perspective on how companies can align their patent operations with their technology development cycle and business goals to produce the right patent portfolio for them. He prides himself on using best practices in patent management to help clients improve their invention capture and decision-making, while insuring that value-added patent drafting and prosecution services are seamless and easy to use for inventors, in-house counsel, and patent managers. His background in strategic analysis of patent portfolios, offensive and defensive portfolio building, and legal opinions of non-infringement, invalidity, and freedom to operate make him a valuable resource for clients.

Devin’s technology focus is on software, computer systems, and electromechanical systems, including data systems and machine learning, robotics, advanced manufacturing, energy systems, environmental systems, and embedded systems (Internet-of-Things), with an emphasis on control systems and artificial intelligence. As an advocate for the social and environmental responsibilities of businesses, Devin also has a keen interest in cleantech, food systems, and social justice ventures.

Devin started his legal career Am Law 100 law firms Hunton & Williams and Fenwick & West, before moving into intellectual property consulting with ipCapital Group and other firms. He was recruited by Maxtor Corp. to help overhaul patent operations for the data storage giant and was there when the company was acquired by Seagate Technologies. He worked as general counsel for a venture-backed startup and went on to co-found a cleantech startup. Devin joined Patent Law Works in 2018 to help technology companies build better patent portfolios with a firm that values client service, legal and technical excellence, and giving back to the community. Devin is admitted to practice in New York and a member of the United States Patent Bar.

Devin has developed a patent operations toolkit, including a patent management assessment for improving companies’ patent functions. He writes and speaks on best practices in patent portfolio development and management.
