Michael has extensive experience in building patent portfolios for a wide range of technical fields, including computer software, electronics, electromechanical devices, digital healthcare, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and electronic media. He is a trusted advisor to executives, in-house counsel, and founders looking to create patent portfolios that support their business needs.

Michael’s practice includes strategic patent portfolio development, domestic and international patent prosecution, IP counseling, and evaluating risks from third-party patents. Michael’s extensive intellectual property diligence experience on both sides of M&A and financing transactions has strengthened his ability to provide maximum value to his clients. Michael has represented leading and established companies as well as startups on the path toward success.

Prior to joining Patent Law Works, Michael’s legal career included working as an associate at Fenwick & West, an Am Law 100 law firm, working as in-house patent counsel for Salesforce.com, and working at several Silicon Valley IP boutiques.

Michael gives generously of his limited spare time serving on various Bar associations and community organizations. Michael has served on the board of several bar associations, including Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), the largest and oldest LGBTQI+ bar association in the country, and the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California (VABANC). Michael also has served as a co-chair of the LGBT committee of the Asian American Bar Association – Bay Area (AABA) and on the conference planning committee and Executive Board of the National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (NCVAA). Michael founded the AAPI Caucus at the National LGBTQ Bar Association annual conference, Lavender Law. He is recognized as a committed community organizer, diversity advocate, and leader in San Francisco for LGBTQ+ & AAPI communities by the California State Legislature, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and the Bar Association of San Francisco.
