His practice focus includes strategic patent portfolio development, domestic and international patent prosecution, and intellectual property transactions for venture creation, technology acquisition and development, joint ventures, licensing, and M&A.

Devin has been drafting and prosecuting patent applications since 1999, with an emphasis on strategic portfolio development for emerging opportunities. He has drafted and negotiated hundreds of intellectual property agreements, as well as drafting terms, conducting due diligence, and managing compliance for the intellectual property aspects of complex business transactions. His experience as a startup founder, intellectual property consultant, and in-house patent counsel in both acquired and acquiring companies gives him a unique perspective on both the lifecycle value and management challenges of patent assets. He understands the realities of business development, technology development, fundraising, and venture management and takes a holistic approach to patent strategy, management, and transactions.

His technology focus is on software, computer systems, and electromechanical systems, including robotics, advanced manufacturing, energy systems, environmental systems, and embedded systems (Internet-of-Things), with an emphasis on control systems. As an advocate for purpose-driven ventures and impact investing, he also has a keen interest in cleantech, food systems, and edtech.

Devin started his legal career with associate positions with Hunton & Williams and Fenwick & West, before moving into intellectual property consulting with ipCapital Group and other firms. He was in-house counsel for Maxtor Corp. and Seagate Technologies. More recently, he started and ran a solo practice and consulting business that he then merged into an IP boutique in Upstate NY. He also co-founded Good People Energy Technologies Inc., a cleantech startup with a focus on job creation for the disabled. He’s given a TED Talk on local entrepreneurship and has been active in economic development, leading his county’s Industrial Development Agency for several years.
